La Mesa was incorporated in 1912. This city calls itself the “Jewel of the Hills.” Located in the foothills east of San Diego, La Mesa is about nine square miles. The city budget for fiscal 2007 is $126.4 million.

The mayor and City Council are elected to four-year terms. The council meets on the second Tuesday of the month at 4 p.m. and the fourth Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m. Public hearings begin at 7 p.m. Council agendas will be posted on the city's Web site by 5:30 p.m. on the Friday prior to the meeting.
