Roads of the backcountry

The history of roads in the Lake Morena area is interesting, especially when one looks at their reason for being where they are.

One example is the “S curve” on Lake Morena Drive, which has been the site of many fatal accidents over the years. The original road, which we now call Lake Morena Drive, went straight south crossing what is now the Flying A Ranch and the Star Ranch with an exit near Cameron Corners.

School spotlight: Grossmont High School On a hilltop in East County sits an old, stone building that looks like a small castle. The building – actually the area's first high school – opened in the early 1920s, when students used to enter its medieval doors after a hike or horseback ride up the hill. They came from all over East County to Grossmont High School, where they would learn English, math, history and other skills.
